During Thursday’s CBExchange 2022 General Session, President Charla Long unveiled a new C-BEN program, CompetentU. CompetentU is a professional development training program that helps faculty and staff become more competent at designing, building, implementing, and scaling high quality competency-based education offerings.

Long shared that this life-long learning platform can be customized to campuses or state systems, providing access to learning materials and coaching in a flexible way for institutional leaders. This is similar to the way she hopes leaders learn to serve students.

Long stated:

“One of the primary challenges institutions and systems face when creating CBE programs is the lack of expertise on their own campuses. This professional development offering will help prepare institutional leaders with the competencies they need for the work ahead.”

Based on the Quality Framework for CBE Programs and evidence-based research, Long shared that the CompetentU courses model best practices in competency-based education, including:

· Engaging content that showcases learner experience design;

· Sequenced and scaffolded learning to teach the entire program development process, one manageable step at a time;

· Online and on-demand offerings so that faculty and staff can participate in professional development on their schedule;

· Modularized lessons so faculty and staff can target learning to their specific needs;

· One-on-one coaching support, including individualized feedback on real-world application activities; and

· Courses customized with campus or state system branding.

CompetentU will begin in early 2023. Read more about it at https://www.cbenetwork.org/competentu/ or reach out to C-BEN to learn more.
