“I’m caught up in your presence, I just wanna sit here at your feet. I’m caught up in this holy moment, I never wanna leave.”

Attending worship service is important to the life of a believer. The fellowship of the saints and coming together on one accord to worship God, with the presence of the Holy Spirit inhabiting the people is an indescribable feeling.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Worship

“Come Holy Spirit”

Is one of the most powerful, yet simple prayers I have heard at the beginning of a corporate worship gathering. The word spirit also means “breath” and asking the Holy Spirit to come into our worship is like asking him to breathe on us. When the saints gather together in worship, the Holy Spirit can begin to work.

First, the Holy Spirit purifies us; cleansing us of our sins, sanctifying and consecrating us for service to the Lord (1 Cor. 6:11). The Holy Spirit also empowers us for ministry and service. In corporate worship, nothing we do is valid without the power of the Holy Spirit moving in and dwelling among us. Exhibiting the fruits of the Spirit in worship shows forth his presence in our lives; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. For the body of Christ to grow and function together, we as a people must allow the Holy Spirit to produce these fruit in us. The Holy Sprit also unifies us and enables our worship. John 4:23–24 calls for true worshippers to worship the Father in spirit and in truth; as God is Spirit those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. The Spirit of God is able to rest upon a body of believers that come before God with clean hands, pure and adoring hearts and lips filled with praise.

Lastly, the Holy Spirit grants us gifts. 1 Corinthians 12 tells us that there are many kinds of spiritual gifts, but that the same Spirit is the source of them all. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so that we can help one another, in service to God. It is important for believers to operate in the gifts given to and intended for them, and not try to dabble in others that weren’t because that is like telling God he made a mistake. Each gift, akin to the part of the body, are important to the body of Christ and the operation of the gifts in the church point to the glory of God.
