[Effective Communication Design] : IKEA Instructions

One example of effective communication design can be exhibited in an Ikea instruction booklet. With simple illustration, the Ikea instruction booklets are easy to read and comprehend without the use of words.

Cautionary advice is given alongside the steps, giving the user an overall glance at the overall project + premises + risks. Much like telling a story, the Ikea instruction booklets translate the story of putting together a furniture piece, transforming what is seemingly a tedious task to a simple lego project.

The simplicity of the instructions makes it comprehensible to everyone, breaking both potential language and age barriers.

[Ineffective Communication Design] : “Too Cool to doDrugs Pencil”

Sometimes the age and wear of a product can alter what it might try to communicate to the user. In this ineffective design, a pencil with the words “ Too cool to do Drugs” is passed around at school meeting to discourage the use of drugs. However, ironically as the pencil is used that initial phrase is altered to “Cool to do Drugs” and eventually “do drugs.”

This example shows how what might seem as a simple design to discourage the use of drugs for students in school….might lose its interpretation over time. It is a literal example of how a message that one might try to communicate might alter with the time and use factors.
