Project 3

Exercise 1: Typeface Tracing

Letters of 4 different fonts are traced with fine-tip sharpies and tracing paper. These different fonts represent variety of styles and shapes. These typefaces have different/similar weight, proportion, axis, terminals, rhythm, etc.

Typeface Tracing

Exercise 2: Typographic Voice

In this exercise, different typefaces are selected to match a specific word. This allows for exploration of how the typeface affects the feeling, emotion and definition of the word.

Experimentation

For the word “organic”, I chose to use Bradley Hand Bold font (below) because this font looks very natural and hand written. Most fonts looked machine made but for the word organic I wanted to choose something that was wasn’t machine made and I think that this font represented something natural perfectly. The other fonts I chose on the left also represented a natural and organic penmanship but Bradley Hand Bold felt the most natural and free.

Final Option
Experimentation

For the word “supreme”, I chose Bodoni 72 Small Caps Book because this font reminded me of very proper supreme court justice people. The font involves very straight lines with some bolded and accented lines. When thinking of the word supreme, I think of people that are in charge and high up in the pay range. They usually dress very proper and look very important which is what this font does.

FInal Option
Experimentation

For the word “purity”, I chose to use the font Herculanum (below). The word purity reminds me of nature, water, elements of earth and even the cartoon show Avatar. This font gives me the vibe of the water element of earth. It has an Asian hint and in a lot of Asian cultures, elements of the earth and the energy that come from nature are important.
