Exercise 2

Tradition

Tradition

When one thinks of tradition, the first typeface that one thinks of is Times New Roman, which is the one I used. There is really no contest — although the script fonts (such as Old English and Parchment) may represent writing done in earlier times, they illustrate history or antiquity more than tradition. The Times typeface has stood the test of time from the 1930s, and readers typically associate it with traditional printed publications and documents, reinforcing the meaning of the word.

I considered some of the more modern-style sans-serif typefaces typically used in highly designed websites and magazines etc. Segoe UI is a typeface often used in user interfaces in software, and in this case the Light font weight version of it worked well for depicting a piece of text that one would expect to see in the future. It also has a high x-height compared to similar fonts like Calibri, which also tends to evoke future-ness.

Experimentation is synonymous with prototyping, drafting, etc. Most of the time they are done by hand rather than with computer software, which is what I was looking for when considering typeface options. I considered the Txt font, which I thought was more exotic and outlandish than experimental, and I thought the word Experimental was better served with a handwritten font like Inkfree.
