For project 5 we are making our own booklet. I initially had a couple ideas including a book of indie video games and a pocket Emily Dickinson poetry with my illustrations. I ended up making a Dylan lyric book with consideration of coherence in color scheme as well as the general art theme. Bob Dylan’s prolific career provided us with numerous photos that are not just aesthetically beautiful but also historically significant. And for the most part, these photos are Black & White, excellent for my purposes.

I had some idea of the songs and photos I want to include. I did some more research into the length of the songs, but still ended up keeping a really long song “Hurricane” because it had a photo directly related to it, and I really liked it. I ultimately chose 6 songs out of the list below.

Iterations before Interim Crit

I tried many things with the background of the text as I thought It might be too bland to go all white, but ultimately stuck to white.

I tried using the specific blue color often found in Bob Dylan album art and posters. But that did not work for lyric highlights, so I used a bright orange, also a familiar color to Dylan-related art, instead.

Final Version

With the feedback I got I decided to change color scheme into a more coherent B&W with orange highlights only.

I centered the shorter lyrics instead of pushing them to the top left.

I also shifted the locations of the photos on the individual pages. Instead of having all of them centered, they now take up more dynamic spaces according to the structure & light directions within the photo.

Under Suzanne’s suggestion I did an orange overlay for the album covers page to make the color scheme obvious.
