Balancing school and life

As the semester goes on, it can be increasingly difficult to balance school with everyday life. Whether it is work, family or friends, something is always added to the stress of classes. As more assignments pile up, I feel it is harder to compartmentalize my time. I try to make a comprehensive schedule of everything I have to do throughout the week, including all school assignments, work responsibilities and activities with family and friends.

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned throughout my college experience is the importance of scheduling in free time as well. When I try to do everything at once, I end up frazzled. Scrambling around to get assignments done, along with work and family responsibilities, prevents me from giving each task the attention it requires.

Instead of trying to overachieve all at once and putting in less than my best effort, I try to schedule specific time for each aspect of my life. It is easier to fit everything in when I am more organized. I also leave time to relax between responsibilities.

Getting stuck in a cycle of school, work and family obligations can be both physically and emotionally draining. Taking time to be alone and breaking up my busy schedule gives me an opportunity to do things I enjoy. It also gives me a clearer mind to give the most effort possible to tasks without overwhelming myself. Overall, organization and managing free time are skills that have helped me succeed.
