When I was young, I couldn’t wait to move away from Cecil County. It didn’t matter if moving away only meant going to a neighboring state. I wanted to find my own path in life, and I was set on doing it my way. Perhaps you can relate to that feeling?

Not long after high school, I moved to Delaware, which was relatively easy. My family was still close enough to call if something went terribly wrong. I felt safe, yet adventurous. I was like a kid learning to swim, but still needing the stability of floaties.

After several years of living in Delaware, I finally ripped off the floaties and took a flying leap into the deep end the day my partner and I pulled out of the driveway on our way to our new life in Colorado. Colorado was completely different from everything I knew, and I loved every minute of it. I felt like I had finally managed to make my own way in the world.

I lived in Colorado for eight years until my relationship unexpectedly ended. I took time to do some soul searching — Colorado is a great place for that. Eventually, I decided I wanted to be near my family again, so I moved back to Cecil County.

After a few months of adjusting to the summer heat, and learning how to interpret the Maryland accent again, I realized how much I enjoyed being back home. It took moving away to really appreciate what was right in front of me all along. Although we don’t have the Rocky Mountains here, we do have quaint little towns, great food, beautiful places to hike, boat or just relax by the water, and best of all, we have a community of genuinely nice people.

While there’s nothing quite as exhilarating as the anticipation of exploring what the future has to offer, there’s also nothing like the feeling of coming back to where it all began.

I hope you enjoy your time here at Cecil College as you plan where to begin carving your own path. Just remember to come back and share your adventure stories with us!
