Wounds by Wilfredo Rohena
FROM THE BLACK WE HEAR —
I don’t know what to do. The alert, it shocked me! Did I do it? Was I the cause of this tragic event? No, I couldn’t have been. It was their decision.
INT. SCHOOL — MORNING
DAMIEN LOPEZ is a young 15 year old with emotional instability. He has a measly build but is very high tempered. The girls love his curly hair, but he usually gets made fun of for it by the boys around the school.
MADISON is a sweet, loving, young lady. She has just turned 16, and has been DAMIEN’s best friend since Pre-K. She is very easy to talk to, and always stands up to bullies.
The scene starts calmly, but increases in intensity.
Good morning, Madison!
Hey, good morning Damien! How have you been?
I’ve been pretty well, hey, I wanted to talk to you about something.
So my mom has been asking about you. She doesn’t really know many of my friends. I was thinking you could come over and she could finally meet you?
Ummm… Sure. What day? I can’t do today because I have to go home right after school.
How about next Monday?
At this point, we are introduced to WILLIAM. He is the leader of a small posse, and is very infamous for bullying, especially DAMIEN. His “jockey” build makes many students terrified of him.
Hey mophead! (Pushes DAMIEN into the lockers).
DAMIEN runs away to an empty stairwell.
Seriously William? You don’t always have to be such an asshole you know.
Awwwee, little Madison is sticking up for her boyfriend.
MADISON leaves and walks around the school, looking for DAMIEN.
INT. SCHOOL STAIRWELL
DAMIEN sits on the bottom stair, writing in a notebook. MADISON finally finds him.
No! Why is it always me? Why are they always making fun of me? Am I really that much of a piece of trash for them to actually get along with?
Damien, you’re not a piece of trash. Why would you say that?
Because I’m worthless. Maybe I’d be better off dead.
STOP! What’s wrong with you? There are other ways to resolve this situation. Taking your life is not one of them.
The bell rings
Yeah, you’re right. I’m sorry! I’m just sick of being treated like this. Anyways, we have to get to class.
INT. ENGLISH CLASSROOM- 1:20P.M.
DAMIEN walks into class and has a seat in his chair. He makes eye contact with absolutely nobody, and sighs.
We are introduced to MARCUS, a member of William’s posse. MARCUS has a little less of a build than William, but yet many kids are intimidated by him.
As MARCUS walks into the room, other members of the posse follow.
Hey shaggy dog. You’re early. Why don’t you walk to the bathroom and wash your nasty fur? (Laughs)
You’ll pay for it one day.
What’d you just say shithead? You’d better watch who you’re talking to.
MARCUS very lightly smacks DAMIEN in the back of the head. DAMIEN begins to write in his journal.
DAMIEN writing in his journal
I’m not the bad person, am I? No, it’s them. This school is full of jerks. Madison says to find another way to resolve the situation, but how? All of my hope is gone right now. I don’t want to live. I refuse to live. I will talk to Madison when I get home.
Int. Damien’s house- 3:02 p.m.
We meet Damien’s mom, VERONICA. She does not have the best job, and, therefore, struggles to put food on the table. She is very respectful to her son.
DAMIEN walks into his house.
Hey, buddy. How was your day?
The usual. Get there, do work, get out.
Are you hungry?
No, thanks, not yet. I’ll be upstairs if you need me.
DAMIEN goes to his room, and throws his book bag on his bed. He very hurriedly rushes to get out his notebook. He begins writing a letter to Madison.
I guess it’s true what they say. Those who love you will be by your side everyday. When everyone pushed me around and took advantage of me, you were always the one to rush to my side. You are going to be the hardest person
to say goodbye to. I love you Madison! Don’t you ever forget that. This isn’t your fault, it’s theirs.
DAMIEN stops writing and crumbles up the paper.
I figured it out. I will join the bully game. I will let them feel my pain. I will give them wounds. Wounds worse than mine. I will be the dealer, and they will get the worst cards.
INT. DAMIEN’S HOUSE — DINNER TABLE — 5:23p.m.
We see DAMIEN eating dinner, thinking about ways to become the bully.
Hmmm, well William doesn’t know that I know he has an STD. Let’s see how that plays out for him. And Marcus, well, well, he got three girls pregnant at the same time and left all of them right after. James beats all of his girlfriends. Neil molested a 9 year old and 7 year old, and Adam watches adult films everyday in class without the teacher knowing. Hmmm, looks like the posse is in deep trouble.
INT. DAMIEN’S BEDROOM — 7:20 A.M.
The alarm sounds, and DAMIEN rushes out of bed
(Rushing to get his clothing on)
Shit! I’m gonna be late again.
DAMIEN rushes to the bathroom to very quickly brush his teeth. He grabs his book bag and runs out of the door.
INT. SCHOOL — 7:50 A.M.
DAMIEN runs to his locker, and WILLIAM and the posse follow.
Look at this dork. Running late to school again? No surprise there! Even your alarm clock doesn’t want to talk to you!
(Bystanders look on laughing)
Is that the best you got buddy? What do you expect me to do now? Run away and cry. I have a better idea. I’ll join in on the game. Do you remember Rachel? Your ex? The one you gave an STD. Yeah, now the whole school knows about that. And hey, you, Marcus, aren’t you dating Hannah right now? Are you gonna get her pregnant and leave her like you did your last three girlfriends? Neil, how about those two girls you molested? What were their ages? 9 and 7? Yeah, exactly. Then there’s Adam. Do you watch adult films in class because you can’t get an actual girl? Why don’t we just fill your locker with tissues?
The hallways become quiet for seconds, until the students burst out with laughter.
You have AIDS, you have AIDS! The next girl you’re gonna get is your mom!
Here, maybe these will help!
(Dumps a pile of paper towels onto Adam’s head and laughs)
The Posse leaves the area, ashamed of being laughed at.
INT. ENGLISH CLASS — 1:25 P.M.
DAMIEN sneaks into class late and realizes that Marcus isn’t in the room.
MRS. DAVIDSON confronts DAMIEN for being late.
Mr. Lopez, class starts at 1:20. You are expected to be here on time. Take a seat.
DAMIEN takes a seat, and begins pondering on Marcus’s whereabouts.
INT. WILLIAM’S HOUSE — 1:30 P.M.
The posse are all sitting around on the floor, a pill bottle in the middle.
My life is ruined. Nobody knew that, and now the whole school does. I’m gonna have to live my whole as the guy with AIDS that nobody wants to date.
Nobody knew about that part of my life. I’m screwed. Forget no one dating me. I can’t even get a job now.
I’m gonna be the joke of the school that always gets handed tissues and paper towels. I refuse to.
I’m never getting a girl again. I screwed up and I can’t fix it. This is the only way.
Are you guys ready?
A song begins playing in the background.
One by one, each of the, shakes their head, and grabs a handful of pills.
1, 2, 3.
They toss the pills into their mouths, and swallow them. They huddle into a group, hug, and say their goodbyes.
INT. MATH CLASS — 2:16 P.M.
DAMIEN receives a notification to his phone.
Four local teens found dead. All deaths ruled suicide.
DAMIEN runs out of the room and runs home.
INT. DAMIEN’S HOUSE — 2:43 P.M.
He slams the door and rushes to his bed.
DAMIEN’S ROOM — 2:44 P.M.
We see the shot of Damien’s journal with his beginning voice over written in it. The camera moves its way down the page to where we see DAMIEN finishing writing.
