It’s been over two weeks since the last update to Ceev - hopefully the wait will be worth it. Today I finished up what I have been working on, and Ceev for web is live.

It took about a week and a half longer than I expected — but only because I wanted to get it right. I wanted to make sure it was the same experience whether you’re using a laptop, tablet, or phone, and whether your device runs Windows, MacOS, Android, or iOS.

The web version is not simply a port of the extension, it’s basically a complete re-write of the application. Why? I wasn’t thinking ahead when originally developing the extension. The way I designed the UI made it hard to scale. I was running out of room to add places for new features, and there was no easy way to scale that UI to smaller devices.

What’s New?

Not only the design is different, though, there are several major changes that give you more control of your resume design and content. Here are a few:

  • With an account, you can now save your resume and access it from any device at any time.
  • The templates are now designed in a way that gave me more control to completely change the layout between templates — so I was able to improve several templates and add some cool new ones.
  • The templates now automatically scale to the paper size you need.
  • Users can now upload their own photo to include on their resume.
  • You now have full control over the arrangement of items and sections on your resume simply by dragging and dropping.
  • I added more text editing features such as bullets, and bold/italic/underline support.
  • Along with better control over font sizing, I added the ability to control the spacing between items on your resume.
  • It’s a progressive web app! Try it out by finding the “Add to Homescreen” button in your phone or tablet’s browser menu. It will behave just like an app.

While working on this update, I had several things I wanted to make sure not to lose sight of. Most importantly, I wanted this to be the fastest and easiest way to make a decent-looking resume, which is why accounts are completely optional. If you don’t want your information stored on servers, or you just need to type up a quick resume you won’t need to edit again, you can still do so without making an account.

A few things to keep in mind

It’s currently March 16th, if you’re using it in the next few days, you may run into some broken help links. Now that I’ve uploaded Ceev web, I need to change the home page at Ceev.io to reflect the new web app instead of the extension.

What about the extension? Until I update the main website at ceev.io, the extension will still be the old version — just so I don’t confuse anyone visiting the website only to see the extension is different. Once I update the extension, it will pull the content off your LinkedIn into the new web UI, and you will be able to save it to your account or edit it there instead.

Did you already pay for Ceev+? License keys are no longer needed with Ceev web, but if you already paid, you will need to tie your old key to your new account. To do this, create an account on app.ceev.io and make sure you are signed in, then click this link and enter your key. It will verify your email and key and upgrade your account.

Find any bugs? That’s not too surprising. Please let me know by emailing me at hello@ceev.io. Please include what is wrong, and what device you were using, including the device type (computer, phone, tablet), OS (Mac, Windows, Android, etc), and what browser (Chrome, Safari, etc) — i’d really appreciate it.

What’s next?

A lot. Now that the new version is live, I will return to regular updates to fix bugs and add new features. I have some bigger ideas that I plan on experimenting with soon, including:

  • Custom theme support(if you know CSS/HTML)
  • Exporting to JSON (or an API)
  • Matching cover letter builder
  • Customizable public URL to share instead of a print-out or emailing a PDF
  • Much more

Enjoy 😊
