A mix of fire and water; bones has his own elemental flow. Known for his ghastly style and graveyard mentality “Ghost in my hair, I got ash on my jeans ,these women tryna scheme, cuz I look like Dawson’s Creek”- Dirt. He receives some heartfelt critique about his “aesthetic” tweeters say he’s copying 90’s grunge and gangster rap “style” tweeters like to tweet he has no real objective to his music. Me and many other fans strongly disagree. Vaporwave and cloud rap has been making an impact upon the rap community since around 2013. Bones is constantly compared to Yung Lean, another cloud rapper. Instinctively different style from cloud rap, bones has intentional vague yet heavy emotional raps with planned dissonance. Purposefully allowing you to feel his “aesthetic”. I don’t like using the word aesthetic to describe his music, his image is half of his story.
His music videos actually remind me of how Frida Kahlo portrayed herself in her artwork. A printed self portrait narrative with multiples meanings. Yet there is a consensual mood and tone presented. Humor like Hannibal Buress and style like Frida…yeah. He’s is a well known phantom in the rap game, because he refuses to sign with any major labels. All his music is free and easily accessible online. Refusing to be another white rapper puppy like Mac Miller or G Eazy, he stays away from big labels for a reason. Distinct style and music production which isn’t comparable to other big label rappers. Allowing his fans to come him was the best seemingly nonchalant business move Bones could make.
This interview shows Bones “trolling” (gag) nature. These words help clarify for newcomers. He’s cynical yet does not have a shady or fake attitude about him. His music is his music. That silly expression “it’s your road and yours alone, others may walk it, but no one can walk it for you” sums up his outlook. Laid back, emotional, direct, meek, freak, living life with an accidental winning streak. Love or really hate what you do boo, then *~*success*~* will be true and come to you.
