Fifth Annual Gathering of the Descendants of Fort Boonesborough

Mark your Calendar: Trace Your Ancestors Who Were at Boonesborough

Hold the date of Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the Fort Boonesborough State Park to explore the lives of your 18th century and early 19th ancestors. This is a unique opportunity to research with genealogy experts and learn from authors in their fields to search for your pioneer relatives.

Once a year, descendants of the early settlers in the area of Fort Boonesborough assemble to greet their cousins, (both known and unknown), as they share stories of the early families of Kentucky. This is the 5th year of the “Gathering of the Descendants of Boonesborough” event where attendees can receive resources and information about their relatives who were at the fort in the early days of 1775–1820.

GEORGE W. RANCK, a historian wrote from his 1915 book,

BOONESBOROUGH: ITS FOUNDING, PIONEER STRUGGLES, INDIAN EXPERIENCES, TRANSYLVANIA DAYS, AND REVOLUTIONARY ANNALS

“BOONESBOROUGH, like a mist of the morning, has vanished, and the place which knew it once will know it no more forever…”

“Other towns in Kentucky, like Lystra and Franklinville and Ohiopiomingo, have vanished, but they never had any except a paper existence,

while Boonesborough was a reality.

Meet Descendants of Four Original Boonesborough Families

Participants can explore ideas of where to find genealogical information about their ancestors. This year attendees can talk with representatives from four original Boonesborough families present to discuss their family genealogical connections including the Boone family; the Chenault family; the Calloway family; and the Kincaid family. Representatives from other families are welcome to attend as well.

Volunteers will be on hand to assist participants with information on genealogy, early Kentucky cemeteries, and early Madison county family history. These groups include the Society of Boonesborough, the Boone Society, the Friends of Boone Trace, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the American Revolution, the African American Genealogy Group of Kentucky, and the Madison County Historical Society. Staff from the Eastern Kentucky University Special Collections and Archives and the Bluegrass Heritage Museum of Winchester, KY will participate.

One group of descendants not previously participating in this event are Native Americans. Dr. John Fox, President of the Friends of Boone Trace, extends a special invitation to Native American relatives to attend this event and explore their family connections.

Archeology Findings from Original Boonesborough Site

Early sketch of Fort Boonesborough, KY

This year’s program features a special presentation given by Nancy O’Malley on the “Boonesborough Unearthed: Frontier Archaeology at a Revolutionary Fort” and who will discuss findings from her recently published book.

Randell Jones, a noted Daniel Boone scholar, and author of numerous books will share stories of early travel on the Boone Trace.

George Chalfant, author of Boone Trace — Opening the Western Frontier: A Historical Perspective of Boone Trace in Kentucky 1775–1795 and Firearms and Ammunition Used by Fort Defenders and Native Americans at Fort Boonesborough 1777 & 1778: Revolutionary Battles at Fort Boonesborough will attend. Joan Mayer, author Of Family and Place will sign her book about many of the ancestral families that settled the land in Clark County, Kentucky.

In addition, authors Harry Enoch and Anne Crabb will be signing their new book African Americans at Fort Boonesborough which was released earlier this month. Author Neal O. Hammond, who conducted primary document research on the original Boone Trace during the 1970s will also be present to sign his book Following Boone’s Trace.

Other authors will be on hand to sign books about early days of the fort, the people, and the surrounding areas. There will be an ongoing historical interpretation of the daily lives, chores, skills, and trades of those who came to Boonesborough during this time and attendees may view museum exhibits of artifacts from the original fort site.

Tom Black, past President of the Madison County Historical Society, talked about the importance of this singular event.

“People from the four corners of the US, from Maine to Texas, to California to Virginia have come to Kentucky to attend this gathering. The biggest positive that people have gotten is the connections that have been made — people who have found somebody — a long lost cousin or a surprising link to an important relative that they did not know”.

“We have helped numerous ‘family organizations’ increase their reach into their distant families, with people not knowing that they qualify to be part of a membership group that represents their relatives. For example, the Society of Boonesborough has had a huge number of candidates from people who attend who find out their ancestors were likely at Boonesborough.”

The event will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2019, from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. Program is free with Fort admission. Dean Whitaker, President of the Society of Boonesborough encourages all visitors to see the original site of the fort located by the Kentucky River. There are monuments, interpretive signs, and state highway history signs to see. This information will help to provide a better understanding of the history of Fort Boonesborough. For more information, check websites Fort Boonesboroughlivinghistory.org and Fort Boonesborough Foundation.org.

If you are interested in attending this event, you may want to check this list of early settlers of provided by the Fort Boonesborough Foundation on their website. This list is the same as on the memorial located at the fort created and sponsored by The Society of Boonesborough in 1981.

Early Settlers of Fort Boonesborough

On April 1, 1775, Daniel Boone, Richard Henderson (Henderson arrived about 3 weeks later) and their companions, reached the southern bank of the Kentucky River and began to build a fort, afterward known as Boonesborough.

About Friends of Boone Trace, Inc.

Friends of Boone Trace, Inc. is a non-profit group organized to preserve the remnants of Boone Trace and to increase awareness of its historical significance.
