Celo Team Updates | July 2018
Hello from the Celo team. Our focus this month has been on growth in the form of offices, team, and community.
Expansion to Berlin
As part of our international expansion strategy, we’re excited to announce the launch of our Berlin office. The local talent, thriving crypto community, and access to NGOs made it a natural fit for our first international office. With the office opening, we have two new team members, Markus Franke and Anca Bogdana Rusu. Markus and Anca bring experience and expertise that allow us to build the foundation of our stablecoin and connect us with our customers.
Markus Franke heads Celo’s European operations and is responsible for reserve management and trading. Prior to joining Celo, he worked as multi asset portfolio manager and investment advisor at Allianz Global Investors, where he was also an active member of the Global Multi Asset Research & Development Group. Before AllianzGI, he started his career in the financial industry at Merrill Lynch International and J.P. Morgan Securities. He earned a PhD in quantitative finance from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
Anca Bogdana Rusu is the Go-to-Market Lead for Celo and has spent the last eight years focused on financial inclusion at the World Bank and IFC (International Finance Corporation). She has worked directly on digital financial services in emerging markets in Africa, Latin America and Europe. Her work looks at how technology can advance financial inclusion for those unserved by the formal financial sector. Anca received her Master of Public Policy at Georgetown University.
To celebrate the opening of the Berlin office, we invite you to join us on July 24th to discuss how blockchain and cryptocurrencies can help create economic prosperity for the underserved. Please help us spread the word.
A Home in San Francisco
We opened the doors to our new San Francisco office. Walking around our block in the Mission, we are inspired by diverse culture, beautiful murals, and delicious food. As we settle in, we are keen to connect and participate with the local community. If you know of a local non-profit that is focused on financial inclusion, we would appreciate an introduction.
Our new space inspires collaboration and community-building and we are planning an Open House event — stay tuned for an announcement.
Our team is continuing to build out our easy-to-use Android light client Celo App. The app is written primarily in React Native with the exception of the light client itself, which is built on top of the protocol’s Go code. We’ve also built out an alpha version of our identity protocol, making it exceedingly simply to send payments to others on the network. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been building with you!
Our first speaking event took us to Rwanda for the GSMA Mobile 360 Series Africa summit. The purpose of the summit is to explore how people, not technology, may lead the digital revolution. We look forward to connecting with the current and future leaders of Africa’s Digital Revolution. Follow along #M360Africa.
Building the Foundation
It’s important for us to build a company grounded in our values and thinking about the long-term. Our two company values are unique purpose and connectedness. We believe an individual is most joyful and inspired when they are their authentic self and living true to their unique purpose. At the same time, people thrive in community and in connection with each other. Creating an economic system that supports both individual goals and community resilience is our mission. While aspirational, we want to understand what these values mean in practice. In late June, we spent an afternoon reflecting and ideating on these practices and are starting to weave them into the fabric of our culture.
Want to help build products for financial inclusion? We are actively hiring across a variety of specialities including engineering, legal, and business and are looking for folks who are particularly inspired by our mission to build a system that creates economic prosperity for all. Apply at celo.org/jobs and tell us how you’d like to contribute.
