In coordination with the Interchain Foundation, the Celo Foundation has awarded a grant to Chorus One to construct a bridge between the Cosmos Hub and Celo. Once complete, the bridge will expand interoperability between the Cosmos and Celo ecosystems, allowing users, funds, and value to flow more freely. This represents another important step towards achieving our ultimate goal of a global, universal financial system.

“We believe that the industry is not zero-sum, or winner takes all. In a future with many chains, cooperation is necessary to realize our goal of a globally accessible and inclusive financial system. We view the implementation of cross-chain architecture as an act of Mutually Assured Development.”

- Marek Olszewski, CTO of cLabs and Co-Founder of Celo

Chorus One seeks to build a proof-based bridge that will enable bidirectional communication between Cosmos and Celo. To accomplish this, a unique light client will need to be built and implemented on each chain. As a result, we split the work between two service agreements — a WASM-based Light Client funded by ICF and a Tendermint Light Client funded by the Celo Foundation.

WASM-based Light Client

Tendermint Light Client (via an EVM Precompile)

What is particularly nice about this approach is that in addition to supporting Cosmos-SDK-based chains, the ed25519 precompile also enables the Celo blockchain to verify signatures and block headers for a variety of other chains that utilize the ed25519 curve. This groundwork will make it significantly easier to build bridges between Celo and chains like Polkadot, NEAR, and Solana.

In short, the light client will allow IBC packets to be verified within Celo smart contracts, facilitating a wide array of new and exciting use cases.

“This project lays the groundwork for communication between Celo and the Cosmos ecosystem. While conceptually similar to tBTC, bridges between PoS chains offer the promise of faster messages and less bonding.”

- James Prestwich | Partner at cLabs, Formerly Founder at Summa

We are excited at the promise that this new bridge offers and the opportunities that it will create. Once launched, users will be able to more readily interact with contracts, applications, and projects on both Cosmos and Celo. We hope to help create a more vibrant, feature-rich, and accessible ecosystem for all through the implementation of versatile cross-chain architecture.
