The Week at CSIS: The Speeches, Discussions, and Events from August 6th to August 10th
CSIS hosts over 2,000 events a year, from major public speeches to small briefings. Join us here for an inside look at the events of the week.
8.07: The Economic Impact of Fighting Corruption in Guatemala
The recent economic slowdown in the Central American region is connected to patterns of national corruption. A report entitled “The Economic and Fiscal Impact of the Fight Against Corruption in Guatemala” published by the Central American Institute for Fiscal Studies (ICEFI) focuses on this issue and debunks erroneous arguments that the fight against corruption is costly to the economy. CSIS hosted the launch of the study with Ricardo Barrientos, ICEFI’s Senior Economist, who presented the reports findings and discussed anti-corruption efforts and economic policy in Guatemala.
8.08: U.S. Arms Transfer Policy
The Trump Administration released its new Conventional Arms Transfer (CAT) policy and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) export policy in April 2018. It constitutes the first update to the CAT policy since January 2014. CSIS hosted a panel to discuss the Administration’s new CAT policy and to contextualize and discuss challenges in implementation, as well as opportunities presented for U.S. strategy and U.S. business as a result of this policy update. The event featured keynote remarks from Tina S. Kaidanow, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs.
