Turning Point: A New Comprehensive Strategy for Countering Violent Extremism

Tony Blair, Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

The CSIS Human Rights Initiative launched Turning Point, the groundbreaking report from the CSIS Commission on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE). The report calls for a new comprehensive strategy to address the global scourge of violent extremism in the United States and abroad. The goal of the Commission was to clearly articulate what the next United States Administration, in close collaboration with governmental and nongovernmental partners, must do to diminish the appeal of extremist ideologies and narratives. Co-chaired by Leon Panetta and Tony Blair, the Commission argues for a new paradigm — one that recognizes violent extremism as the global, generational challenge that it is and leverages all tools available to defeat it.

The Commission created a new interactive map to see global terrorist attacks since 2012. Visit www.csis.org/features/turning-point for more.

21st Century Tech Talent and the American Economic Edge

Fariborz Ghadar, CSIS Distinguished Scholar and Senior Adviser

In partnership with the Penn State Smeal College of Business, the CSIS Scholl Chair in International Business hosted a discussion on the demand for 21st century manufacturing and STEM skills. The demand for science and technology expertise is a global phenomenon. The requirements of the industry are not being met. STEM fields are expected to see increases ranging from 16% in mathematics to 62% in biomedical engineering. A number of industries are already facing serious skills gaps when it comes to STEM capabilities. 26 million US job s— 20% of all jobs — require a high level of knowledge in any one STEM field. Half of all STEM jobs are available to workers without a four-year college degree. The panelists aimed to answer the question: How can we ensure that the U.S. workforce has the science and technology capabilities necessary to be competitive in the global economic environment?
