Center for Cooperative Media announces 2019 diversity, equity and inclusion grants for NJ journalists
The money is meant to help NJ journalists attend events this year hosted by organizations that are working to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in media
Last year, the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University launched an award fund dedicated to helping New Jersey journalists attend trainings, events and conferences hosted in 2018 by organizations that work toward improving diversity, equity and inclusion in media.
In previous rounds, we awarded two sets of nearly $10,000 in grants for journalists in our state to attend events put on by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA), the Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM) and the NLGJA — The Association of LGBTQ Journalists.
Today, we’re thrilled to kick off 2019 by announcing a third round of awards.
The award fund provides stipends of up to $500 for local New Jersey journalists to attend eligible events. The funding for these stipends is made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Local News Lab Fund, a partnership between Democracy Fund, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the Community Foundation of New Jersey.

What can this money be used for?
The grants can be used to cover registration, travel costs or member dues related to the event.
The grants can be applied to more than just the events and organizations listed above; applicants will be asked to indicate which training or conference they are applying for when submitting their application.

The stipends are open to journalists of all backgrounds.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Reside or work in New Jersey.
- Provide proof of employment in media, or proof of being a student studying journalism or a related field.
- Detail which event they will use the grant funding to attend.
- Agree to share information about what they learned after the event, for the benefit of others in the New Jersey ecosystem.
