Don’t go looking for monsters

Mother told us not to go looking for the monsters. “They bite,” she said, “and tear human flesh. They feast on it.”

“But we are bored,” we said, “and we are hungry.” We watched her move from table to pan, from pan to stovetop. Frying. Searing. Boiling.

“What do we have for dinner, Mamma?” we asked, and we were many.

“Your favorite.” She licked her fanged lips and buzzed about the kitchen. “Homo sapiens. You can taste the freshness.”
