Lydia steps out onto the porch to see the glow of moonlight stream across the field that she will need to harvest soon. Her eyes follow the path to the barn where the red paint curls away, leaving a muted brown behind. She focuses her gaze closer to the house where the iron gate lightly swings in the night’s breeze, creaking.

She closes her eyes and is transported back to the hospital. The light beeping, then the long, lonely single beep. And then he’s gone.

As the grandfather clock strikes midnight, she sighs. She’s lost all passion for this place.
