Rosie skated in sync with “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” which boomed over the rink’s loudspeakers. First forward, then backward, and then she was spinning. She spent most Saturdays skating.

Rosie daydreamed about her upcoming sixteenth birthday.

Large hands grabbed Rosie’s shoulders, abruptly disrupting her equilibrium. She crashed to the floor with a thud.

“Watch it, man!”

“Sorry.” She heard a male voice and wondered if it belonged to a cute boy around her age.

“That’s okay.” She looked at a tall, handsome guy. “What’s your name?”

“Luke,” he muttered.

“I’m Rosie. Do you want some skating lessons?”

“Yes, please.”
