Why Sylo put their business on the blockchain and adopted blockchain for their core product

Sylo is a decentralised platform focused on secure communication and social FinTech. Through their messaging application, Sylo provides private communication without the risk of a company accessing and monetising users’ data without their permission. It enables users to connect online without being exploited and having to worry about their personal information being used for commercial purposes.

What business challenge was Sylo trying to solve?

Half a decade ago, Sylo started building a decentralised communication app that protects user conversations and personal information from hackers, unwanted third-parties and service-providers.

Their product proposition had a natural fit with decentralisation and with the maturation of the technology, there came a time to consider adopting blockchain. This would ensure their core product would compete effectively in the market and keep up with the latest developments.

The technology

The Sylo app enables devices to communicate directly, without storing communications’ content on central servers. The Sylo communications and storage protocols are available for use in the Centrality developer toolkit.

Why blockchain?

For the first previous iteration of their product, Sylo still relied on some centralised components, such as server relays, to ensure the delivery of communications between users in cases where direct P2P connections could not be established. Adopting blockchain has enabled Sylo to provide this functionality in a completely distributed, and therefore more secure, way.

What Centrality protocols will Sylo leverage and how are they critical for Sylo’s tech stack?

Sylo is built on CENNZnet, Centrality’s public blockchain for consumer-facing DApps. As an early venture of Centrality’s ecosystem, Sylo is a protocol with special privileges in the network.

Sylo has developed a communication protocol for other DApps to leverage. It’s an out-of-the-box solution that can be used to provide decentralised communication with end-to-end encryption.

The Sylo application is built on a decentralised storage protocol, enabling users to choose who they trust with their data. This protocol will be available for use by other applications on CENNZ-net.

Sylo’s Wallet SDK allows developers to send, store and receive tokens on CENNZ-net. The Sylo app is an example of an integrated CENNZ-net wallet to enable social payments.
