CSEI at World Water Week 2021

Highlights from our time at the event

In the last week of August, we attended the World Water Week 2021 organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) in Stockholm, Sweden. It brought together over 13,000 members of the global water community from 188 countries. We are grateful and proud for the opportunity to present our work to the event’s eminent audience. Here’s the highlight of our sessions.

  1. Mon, 23 August at 6:30 pm IST: Our Green Cities Initiative lead, Shreya Nath presented CSEI solutions for ‘Developing a blue-green-grey infrastructure’ as part of Panel 1: City wide approaches towards urban resilience. This panel explored the city-wide approach to resilience-building and discussed how it could complement the bottom-up approach. More on the session here.
  2. Wed, 25 August at 8:30 pm IST: CSEI Director, Dr Veena Srinivasan, was part of the seminar, “Navigating Uncertain Waters- shifting powers, sharing values”. She was on the panel titled, “Step forward: building resilient institutions through spaces for adaptive and participatory decision-making”. We must build a culture of political accountability and participatory decision-making that values water. More on the session here.
  3. Wed, 25 August at 11 am IST: CSEI Director, Dr Veena Srinivasan, gave the concluding comments at the session, ‘Presenting the 2021 global status of water and sanitation’. To support and report on global progress towards SDG 6, in 2014 UN-Water launched the Integrated Monitoring Initiative for SDG 6. During 2020, the focus of the Initiative was on working with Member States to generate, compile and analyse data for SDG 6 and all its global indicators. In this session, the 2020 results were presented, and the SDG 6 Progress Reports for the global indicators were launched. More on the session here.
  4. Wed, 25 August at 1:30 pm IST: Dr Veena Srinivasan was a panellist on “Carrots, sticks, equity: managing over-pumped groundwater systems sustainably”. Through a fishbowl panel discussion between scientists and policymakers from different countries on carrot and stick approaches, this session aimed to highlight the opportunities for managing groundwater to build resilient societies, exploring opportunities under climate change, and mainstreaming notions of equity.
