Video: 6 key insights on regenerative farming practices

We spoke to 34 farmers from around Bengaluru and these interviews gave us six key insights

To find out more about regenerative farming practices we interviewed 34 rainfed, organic, low-input, smallholder farmers around the semi-arid regions of Bengaluru, namely, Bengaluru urban, Bengaluru rural, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Ramanagara and Tumkur.

These farmers grow ragi; vegetables; flowers; fruit trees like banana, guava and papaya; timber like sandalwood and teak; and trees like coconut and areca.

Typically, farmers switch to low-input agriculture to escape cycles of debt associated with high-input agriculture. Irrigated horticultural farmers join and sell through organic collectives like Sahaja Samrudha and Shivaganga Organics earning an average of Rs 2–6 lakhs per annum.
