The newsletter roundup we posted last year on the blog helped us revisit the incredible effort that the CSEI team put in and celebrate the big and small wins we had over the year. We took a moment to appreciate our own hard work. Who wouldn’t want to relive that high?

February: Why lakes need active citizens and not stupid sensors

Urban Lakes, our lakes initiative, had reached its logical end. We realised that our role is to unlock knowledge for other players so that they could be empowered to take action. Our focus thus shifted to capacity building. This newsletter consolidated all the efforts.

March: Three ways to tackle lantana

Our thinking around lantana was taking shape. We had decided that the way forward was a ‘living labs’ approach, where we start with least risky lantana-invaded sites, learn on the go and course-correct. This newsletter described our efforts to address this problem at scale.

April: Why waste treated water?

We had been studying why treated wastewater was going unused in Bengaluru despite the mandate that apartments with more than 20 units have to install decentralised STPs and adhere to the Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) policy. This newsletter was about the insights that explained this wastage.

April: The new year brought a new newsletter!

In April we started sending out a quarterly newsletter that discusses Jaltol’s development and engagement updates. It also laid out how users can help build Jaltol.

May: How healthy soil can improve farmer income

Tree planting is seen as a solution to the climate crisis. In this newsletter we talk about the importance of soil health in improving agricultural production.

June: Three ways CSEI changed course and evolved in 2021–22

The CSEI annual report focussed on how we have evolved as an organisation. It talked about the value we add as impact ecosystem builders, how we are setting up for success and everything that’s changed since we started CSEI in September 2019.

August: Farms, Forests and our Future

The Farms and Forests team had a lot to celebrate. We had received funding from Oracle for our restoration work. And we had successfully convened researchers with divergent views on restoring lantana-infested forests and found a way forward.

September: Now Turn Waste to Water

In September we talked about visions for wastewater reuse. We discussed where Bengaluru’s water was going, how to put flood water to good use and how to turn Bengaluru’s apartments green.

November: COP27: Our Highlights!

COP27, with its focus on climate finance, was an important event in the CSEI-ATREE’s calendar. Four members of the AREST team — the Alliance for Reversing Ecosystem Service Threats consortium — represented us in Egypt for the event and we organised three side events around soil health, open natural ecosystems and ecosystem restoration. The COP27 newsletter covered this and more.

What’s in store in the new year, you ask? In 2023, we plan to start a new newsletter. This biannual newsletter will bring you news and views on access to water resources in rural India.
