Crypto and Pop Culture

Cutting-edge technology is usually reserved for only a selected few, that is why it is virtually inaccessible for the layman. On the other hand, if this technology spreads widely after a while, it can change our every day.

Did you know that food safety systems, enriched baby food or portable cordless vacuums are all NASA technology? No? Well, pay attention, because the next “big bang” is on the doorstep.

This is the realm of cryptocurrencies. While in the last couple of years, cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology were somehow an obscure field, they can now be caught red-handed in the mainstream media. This is the place where new trends can spread most easily since they have to be explained quickly and simply to media consumers.

Many of us like Marvel comics, right? Right. And we love the Easter eggs hidden in them. One of the Marvel movies with an Easter egg is the new Spider-Man sequel, Spider-Man, Into the Spider-Verse, in which a street screen is joking about the high volatility of Bitcoin, saying: “Bitcoin hits new high.” “Bitcoin hits new low.”

Accident? How about a Bitcoin appearance in Deadpool? There is a scene when Wade Wilson is in the bar with his friend, the bartender, and in a certain frame, in the background, the Bitcoin logo can be easily noticed.

And also in the comic Marvel’s Hunt for Wolverine — Adamantium Agenda #1. In this book, Tony ‘Iron Man’ Stark needs to make a payment with crypto instead of using hard cash.

How about TV series? We can all agree that The Simpsons is an all-time favorite. Since it’s a favorite, it might not come as a surprise that the series is the perfect place to advertise anything. I mean anything, and that includes Bitcoin. It can be caught in the hop in S25E07 or S26E01 which was released December 8, 2013 and October 28, 2014 respectively.

But the list goes on. It started with The Good Wife back in 2012 with the episode titled Bitcoin for dummies (S03E13). In this episode, Alicia (Julianna Margulies) is defending a person who launched an online currency against the Treasury Department. In the HBO Silicon Valley series in 2014 (S01E03) there is a debate about the mineability and volatility of bitcoin,

while in the Navy CIS LA also in 2014 (S06E02) bitcoin is also mentioned for a couple of seconds:

In Big Bang Theory (S11E09), in the episode called The Bitcoin Entanglement, our protagonists are about to retrieve a lost laptop/hard drive on which there was supposed to be a whole bitcoin before its price boom.

And finally, there is the HBO series, Billions. In S03E07 the episode features the ledger cryptocurrency wallet with the line: “one million dollars straight in crypto, in cold storage.” How cool’s that?

Last but not least, there is music. While looking for songs I found many, but only one came up that is really worth mentioning, and that comes Eminem’s new album, Kamikaze. The track title is “Not Alike,” in which the following line can be caught: “Remember everybody used to bite nickel, now everybody doing bitcoin.”

Wait a second, we almost missed the latest one! There is a movie coming to the big screen in 2019 dealing with crypto. It is called Crypto, and it is about an investigation about a web corruption and fraud in New York City.

So crypto and bitcoin as the matter of fact are on the rise also in the pop culture. Is it time to get involved? Well, I guess it is better to dive in into this matter as soon as we have a chance because it might turn out that we have to act quickly in the near future. Maybe sooner than you think…
