The Importance of Connection

--

While walking through the Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) campus, Daniel Zacapa stands out as a man who understands the importance of connection. When most people think about a computer and information technology student, they might think about an introverted individual who enjoys self-guided work. Daniel, however, challenges this misconception.

“I am a people person. I used to be quiet, but now I like to work with people face-to-face to help solve their computer problems.” This rare combination of personality and technical skillset has developed in Daniel throughout his journey here in the United States. As a previous owner of a computer business in his country of origin, Honduras, Daniel struggled to find meaningful work here in the United States. He knew that education was the key to move beyond menial jobs and into a more cognitively-demanding and fulfilling career. He just needed the initial contact with postsecondary education to open the door. This is where The University of Kansas Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) entered his life.

Daniel sought out services to help him understand the financial aid and college admissions process in the United States on multiple occasions, but each time he was met with impersonal interactions and people telling him to “get on a computer and figure it out.” Where many others might have understood this as the end of the road, Daniel continued to seek help until he found the right supports. When Daniel met Kathy Bryant, Director of EOC, he immediately knew that this was going to be different. Kathy took time to walk Daniel through the financial aid process and encouraged him to become as involved as possible on campus at KCKCC. Daniel regularly meets with the EOC staff (Kathy or Laura Thornburg, EOC Academic Advisor) once a semester to ensure that he is on track with his financial aid. He is also very involved with the KCKCC TRIO Student Support Services program, which he credits with much of his success.

This guidance along with the steadfast support of his wife, Daniel is now involved in a multitude of clubs and organizations including Student Senate and the Latin American Student organization, just to name a few. In spending an average of 12 hours per day on campus, Daniel has connected with a wide variety of KCKCC students and staff, “I want to make others feel welcome here at KCKCC!” Daniel has found that with his commitment to the college, comes a responsibility to advocate for others. He now has a platform for his voice through his involvement with campus organizations.

After being encouraged by his wife to get a campus job, Daniel found the perfect fit. Through his work as an intern in Campus Information Services, Daniel continues developing his skills in the field of computer science.

Although he would love to get a job in this field upon graduation, Daniel has learned that education is about much more than just the post-graduation job. “The first goal was to improve my English and to get a job. Then I realized that college is more than that. It helps you to open your eyes and find your purpose in life.” This positive outlook is contagious and radiates from Daniel as he navigates campus daily. “I want to inspire students from different countries! If you want to study, do it!”
