Champignons also known as mushrooms are very nutritious and they are better when they are cooked than raw. No, I’m not going to talk about mushrooms. I’m going to talk about a certain training/seminar thing that I had to attend last weekend. Let’s just call it “The Champignon Seminar”. “What is the problem with using the actual name of the seminar?” you may ask. The problem is: I’m not allowed to divulge the details of the seminar. Like a one-night stand, what happened there, stays there!

But… there is always a “but” in this imperfect world!

How can I remember, consolidate, embed and internalize all the things I’ve learnt during that weekend without writing my own conclusions about them? See, this is what companies often forget! They send their employees away for some three-days training, expecting to see immediate result.

Sadly, no. ROI is not that direct. Allow your employees to internalize, to come to their own conclusions, allow them to blog about it and put what they heard into actions!

Okay, Sandy! Let’s internaliiiizeeeee!!

The Champignon was not a pleasant experience. Lucky for me, few days prior to that, I watched “Human Centipede 3”! (Do you have any idea how sick the Human Centipede franchise is? Ugghh yuck!). So whatever I experienced there didn’t feel as harsh. The Champignon is not your usual team-building, happy, bright motivational seminars. As soon as you arrive, nobody will greet you with a smile. No questions shall be asked. The trainers were angry, bad tempered and eager to break glasses or whatever they could find.

Why do they have to do that?

They said it’s to break the internal blocks that people tend to have. Adult minds have so many blockages that can prevent them from learning and these are barriers that must be torn down. As much as I hate it, I do think this method could work. It’s like your own conscience jumping right out of you, yelling and throwing insults to you shamelessly and you have no opportunity to tell your conscience to shut the fork up because now it is alive on its own, in the form of an angry middle-aged man.

Quitters, deadbeats, addicts, or some people who is in the verge of giving up on life may benefit from the Champignon. Because I’m sure people who actually care about them have tried their best to advise them but for some reason, they failed. Maybe it’s depression, maybe it’s lack of self esteem. These people probably can’t find a way to get up and be responsible of their own lives. For these people, an angry middle-aged man yelling and cursing them could be the answer!

Anyway, there are several things that I liked about the champignons:

  1. Success is not about reaching your goals. Success is a condition where we are on the right path to our goals, constantly marching forward towards those goals. It’s a journey not a certain destination. Many people are discouraged and became depressed because they think they’ve tried really hard but still unsuccessful. What needs to be changed is the way we think, that most of us are already pretty successful so we should walk with confidence.
  2. Nasib vs Takdir. Both words meant destiny in English, but Nasib is mostly caused by us, while Takdir is what the universe handed you. For instance, I was born with a scoliosis and that’s takdir, but just because of scoliosis doesn’t mean that I will end up with a bad “nasib”. Being born into a poor family, blind, etc doesn’t mean “nasib buruk”. While it may initially cause some hurdles, but you can work to change it.
  3. Success is not and never will be a one-person journey. To be successful in something is always about giving better services to others. If you are in retail, you have to find out what people like, how to make sure they get all they need easily. If you’re bank teller, you have to make sure the customer is promptly served, etc. So really, it is about others. This means when you’re successful you need to realize that there are a lot of other people are part of it.

So fingers crossed I’m on the right track. World domination! Mwahahahahaha!

How about you? Have you been in some kind of crazy motivational seminar? Wait, let me revise that: Do you think you need an angry middle-aged man to help you transform yourself? Do you need the Champignons?
