Blockchain — the tragedy of complexity and a bad reputation

It’s always a hard long way to the top if your reputation is somewhat dirty. And this is the case with Blockchain.

Blockchain has quite an interesting history. First, there was Bitcoin — the digital currency. Then, the technical concept behind Bitcoin was found to provide much more value. More value besides being used as a digital currency. Much more value, indeed!

The possibilities with Blockchain seem endless. Unfortunately, when your possibilities seem endless, there are actually no possibilities. It’s like in business cases: when everybody is your target group, when everyone is your market — then actually you have no market.

The endless possibilities of Blockchain make it hard to understand and there are actually very very few real world apps available today.

Look who’s got some dirt on his hands — Mother Bitcoin!

Besides being very broad in potential application, Blockchain has a bit of a troubled background. Blockchain is historically strongly associated with Bitcoin. Bitcoin itself is associated with some dirty business — like it or not, Bitcoin fans. One of the largest dark markets was driven by Bitcoin. The SEC rejected the Bitcoin ETF — giving Bitcoin a hard kick in the balls for not being an accepted currency. The main reasoning: Bitcoin can not be regulated.

So, what do we have with Blockchain?

  1. A distributed ledger technology with endless possibilities and use-cases…
  2. which is quite hard to understand, being very technical…
  3. and having a troublesome parent Bitcoin.

Now here comes the point. 1. is true, 2. is possible to solve, and 3. will vanish.

So, at chain.ventures we believe that there is one piece missing for Blockchain to gain mass adoption and trust: actual use cases for normal people!

Sounds obvious, right?

Let me stress two thing: 1) actual use cases, for 2) normal people. Not quite sure why, but I have can’t stop to stress that.

I’m not talking about the amazing Blockchain platforms, building the shoulders for other services and ideas to stand on — you guys rock! But what is currently out there for the normal people? Let’s say, an app that uses Blockchain to make the life of my mother easier? There is not a single one (I might be wrong, I hope I am wrong!).

At chain.ventures we are starting to develop actual apps for normal people. Stuff that makes your life easier. Apps that don’t require you to understand Blockchain one bit. Heck, imagine how weird it would be if you had to have in-depth knowledge of how a car works to drive one.

Do you know how this all works? Do you have to for driving a modern car? That’s my point.

Our first app is airproof and I am super excited to be involved in bringing a revolutionary technology to the masses! Stay tuned!
