Not all drivers’ licenses are made equal. Whereas some countries are more than happy to recognize the drivers’ licenses of others, there is no automatic reciprocity when it comes to recognizing your right to drive a vehicle in a foreign country.

From Brussels to Belize, Bombay to Bangkok, Boston to Baghdad, your ability to rent a car using your driver’s license, depends very much on where that driver’s license was issued.

In some countries, obtaining a driver’s license as a foreigner requires declarations as to your past traffic violations, especially if you’ve been caught driving under the influence, before authorities are willing to issue you a permit to drive in their country.

And it makes perfect sense.

Given how the standards of instruction for drivers can differ significantly from one jurisdiction to another, and the dangers involved in operating a vehicle, not just to its occupants, but to all road users and pedestrians, it…
