In a general election, voters go about comparing and judging candidates by evaluating their stance on key issues. In most cases, this is relatively straight forward since typical elections involve only a handful of candidates to choose from and their stances on various issues are well publicized.
The EOS network is a liquid democracy. It utilizes a consensus mechanism known as Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), where 21 democratically elected entities get to mine the blocks that get built on the EOS blockchain. These entities are known as Block Producers (BPs). Anyone can become a block producer; you need to run infrastructure capable of producing blocks, followed by an election campaign similar to any other democratic governance process. Block producer candidates will need to create a convincing case for the EOS users to vote for them in order to secure a spot in the top 21 list of block producers.
With hundreds of block producer candidates to pick from, and choosing not just one but up to 30 of them to vote for can take a lot of time for proper research and due diligence. As a consequence, the voter turnout tends to be low with only about 20–25% of EOS being used for voting, and most voters tend to vote for the status quo.
