The idea for People’s Ultimate League (PUL) logo started with a simple purpose: to represent the individuals of Pride with a focus on the reflect on LGBTQIA+ inclusion and progress. We did this by adapting the design language of the iconic Rainbow Flag.

Most importantly, as a design mark, it strives to represent every voice of LGBTQIA+ community directly, independently, and unfiltered. We’re proud that as a an initiative, PUL stands for inclusion and embraces everyone with open arms.

With shifting genders, a whole spectrum of orientations and androgyny all in the mix, ambiguity is an invariable part of the package, and this was desired to come across in the design. Literally using all of the traditional pride colours, the bold design aesthetic, rainbows or otherwise, captures the spirit of power.

The typeface is the free typeface named ‘Gilbert’, inspired by the design language of the iconic Rainbow Flag and an homage to Gilbert Baker the creator of the iconic Rainbow Flag.

Taking the flag and turning it into ribbons is a non-traditional design approach aimed to appeal to, and represent, individuals who have had to forego tradition in their own lives. The logo doesn’t pretend to speak to the experiences of the many queer individuals and movements but instead hopes to be a convergence to bring individuals and communities together and start many conversations via sport.

As a community, PUL is a home to grow, connect, and spark real, nuanced conversations — as well as the potential to instigate change. It is a league which encourages conversations around gender fluidity yet does not scrutinise the gender of its players. Our brand identity is meant to provide a better expression of who we are, where are right now, and where we’re going.
