The Patch Work Report, NFL Week 6
This weekly column will give a brief run through of all the previous weeks NFL games. All fantasy points discussed will be related to the Chalk Daily Fantasy Sports official NFL scoring system.
Denver Broncos @ San Diego Chargers
- ) There is something about this matchup every season where no matter how poorly San Diego plays leading up to it, they exceed expectations against the Broncos. Unfortunately, fantasy upside wasn’t present in this game. There is one-person worth talking about outside the San Diego Chargers kicker (Josh Lambo), who hit 4 field goals through the uprights.
2.) That one person, that everyone should keep an eye on going forward, is Hunter Henry. He has been mentioned in previous articles, but due to Antonio Gates return from injury, most people thought Henry would be going back to the bench. Instead he turned in another solid performance by leading the team in targets (8), catches (6), yards (83), and scored a TD.
San Francisco @ Buffalo Bills
1.) To me, this seemed like a Tyrod Taylor type of game. It could have been too, but unfortunately LeSean McCoy had other plans. With a career high 3 TDs, McCoy carried majority of the workload for the Bills. He finished the day 142 total yards, putting his season resume in discussion with the top RBs in the league.
2.) This was Colin Kaepernick’s first start of the season and it was best described as “bleh”. He seemed wildly inaccurate, missing deep balls and even underthrowing some of his bigger completions. He saved his day somewhat with his legs by rushing for 66 yards.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Chicago Bears
1.) This game was a fantasy disappointment. Almost every fantasy relevant player had a good matchup and nearly every one of them put up mediocre numbers. I am talking about you Blake Bortles, Brian Hoyer, Jordan Howard, Allen Robinson, and Allen Hurns. You can even throw Alshon Jeffery in there if you want, because despite it being one of his better games this season (7 catches for 93 yards), we have to remember he has had 200+ yard games before with arguably less of a QB.
2.) The lone bright spot was Cameron Meredith. He picked up where he left off last week by hauling in 11 catches on a team high 15 targets for 113 yards. He will continue to be a major part of this offense going forward.
Los Angeles Rams @ Detroit Lions
- ) Well who saw this shoot out coming!? You would have thought it was throwback Thursday when looking at the two leading receivers. Kenny Britt lead the Rams with 32.6 Chalk fpts, which included two hard fought TDs, and Golden Tate led the Lions with 30.5 Chalk fpts and should have had another TD to go along with it.
2.) Seeing Matthew Stafford put up a stat line like 270 yards and 4 TDs with no turnovers isn’t too surprising. However, Case Keenum going 27/32 on pass attempts, for 321 yards, 3 TDs, with just 1 INT is very surprising. We most likely will not see that again from him this season, or in his career.
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Miami Dolphins
1.) If the previous game was throwback Thursday, then this game was opposite day. Ryan Tannehill out performed Ben Roethlisberger, Jay Ajayi out rushed Le’Veon Bell, and Jarvis Landry had more receptions and yards than Antonio Brown.
2.) As previously mentioned Jay Ajayi broke out this game, putting up a ridiculous 207 yard, 2 TD stat line. Leading up to the game it was announced the Arian Foster was good to go, which is what made this game even more surprising. I expect Foster to get more than 5 touches in their next game, but let’s see if Jay can keep the starting gig.
3.) The Killers Bees (Brown, Bell, and Big Ben) had an awful game. I expect this to be an outlier. However, note that Big Ben already underwent surgery for a knee injury he suffered in this game. Lower your expectations for this offense until he returns.
Cincinnati Bengals @ New England Patriots
- ) You know when Rob Gronkowski has a career day, it means it was a big fantasy day. Gronk’s personal best 162 yards came from 7 receptions and he tacked on a TD.
2.) When Gronk is having career days, it typically has to do with Tom Brady having a good day. In his second week back, Brady threw for 376 yards, 3 TDs and no turnovers.
3.) Despite the offense clicking for the Patriots, most of the production came from just two players, Rob Gronkowski and James White. Last week it was Martellus Bennet and Chris Hogan. It will be very hard to predict which players do the damage each week, but it makes almost any one of them a lottery ticket.
4.) Giovani Bernard once again out played Jeremy Hill. He produced 94 yards on 19 touches. The Bengals even game him a few goal line carries, but he was unable to convert.
Carolina Panthers @ New Orleans Saints
1.) When any team with an above average offense goes to New Orleans, you should expect fireworks. Despite all the points in this game, the ball was distributed evenly, limiting the fantasy ceiling a bit.
2.) The Saints came out flying in the first half, quickly going up 21–0 on the Panthers. They slowed down a bit in the second half, but Drew Brees put up monstrous numbers. He ended the day with 465 yards passing, 4 TDs with 1 turnover.
3.) Brandin Cooks lead all receivers in this game with 7 receptions for 173 yards and 1 TD. This guy seems to get behind secondaries on a regular basis and when he does, he is gone.
4.) Coby Fleener seems to be getting more involved in the offense. He was tied for second on the team in targets, turning it into 74 yards and a receiving TD. He also ran 1 TD in at the goal line.
5.) The Panthers spread the ball around to many of their weapons. Kelvin Benjamin lead the team in targets (14), but Greg Olsen lead in yards (94).
6.) This was Jonathon Stewart’s first game since coming back from injury. He took over a heavy workload with 19 carries for 85 yards and a TD.
7.) When the final score is 41–38, there’s going to be a lot of fantasy to talk about.
Baltimore Ravens @ NY Giants
- ) Do you think football is fun for Odell Beckham Jr. again? There was an early injury scare with him, that forced him to go to the sideline, but that didn’t last long. He came back into the game and took over. He ended his day with 8 receptions from 10 targets, 222 yards and 2 TDs.
2.) On the other side of the ball, with no Steve Smith Sr., Mike Wallace stepped up, leading the team in receiving yards (97) but he failed to find the endzone.
3.) Terrance West has taken a stranglehold on that starting RB spot for the Ravens. He touched the ball 27 times, which resulted in 127 yards and 2 TDs. He arguably could have had a 3rd TD, but was stopped at the goal line.
Cleveland Browns @ Tennessee Titans
1.) This game was all about Marcus Mariota, who destroyed the Browns with both his arm and his legs. He was his normal efficient-self passing the ball, but took a fair amount of deep shots to his receivers. He ended the day with 284 yards passing, 3 TDs, 1 turnover, as well as 64 yards rushing on 7 carries.
2.) Mariota may have found his new favorite target in Kendall Wright. The veteran dominated the targets for his team with 9 and turned that into 133 yards receiving and a TD. Wright works mainly out of the slot, so although I do expect him to get his targets each week, his yardage upside might have hit its peak this week.
3.) The Browns were able to make this game competitive. Once again, their best player was Terrelle Pryor, who showed off his athleticism throughout this game. He ended the game with 28.5 Chalk pts.
Philadelphia Eagles @ Washington
1.) Remember when everyone was drooling over Carson Wentz? Well, seems like the rookie is starting to come back down to earth. In a decent matchup, he and the rest of the Eagles failed to produce a fantasy relevant stat line.
2.) Matt Jones very quietly put up another great game. He rushed for 135 yards and 1 TD, resulting in 19.5 Chalk pts, on only 16 carries. I have concerns with him, as he had less than 50% of the RB touches in this game and seems to be primarily running on 1st and 2nd downs only.
Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders
1.) The weather in this game was gross from the start, which helped the team that normally plays with a very conservative, dink and dunk, run heavy offense. The game was close through half time, but in the second half the Chiefs took over.
2.) Many people were expecting Jamaal Charles to take over in the backfield for the Chiefs as reports were coming in all week that Jamaal was “100%” and “feels as fast as ever”. Andy Reid clearly thought differently. Spencer Ware carried the rock 24 times and had 2 catches, which he turned into 24.3 Chalk pts.
3.) That being said, Jamaal Charles did get the ball 11 times and scored a TD. As weeks go on, I expect this to be more of a 50/50 split. Spencer Ware is too good to put on the bench.
Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers
- ) What’s wrong with Aaron Rodgers? I am not sure, nor do I care. He is arguably the best QB in the league. Whatever it is, he will fix it.
2.) Dak Prescott is damn good. He is consistently putting up around 250 yards a game and the difference now compared to the beginning of the season is he is finding the end zone. No way Tony Romo takes this job back. Trade Romo to the Browns or something.
3.) Ty Montgomery led the team in targets for the Packers. Weird, right? He mainly came in as a RB (despite being a WR) and caught balls out of the back field in the 5 WR sets. As long as Eddie Lacy is the only active RB, Ty should stay involved in the offense.
4.) Going into this game, the Packers defense ranked 1st in the league against the run. Ezekiel Elliot did not get the memo. He continued his amazing rookie campaign with 28 carries for 157 yards and added 2 catches for 17 yards.
Atlanta Falcons @ Seattle Seahawks
1.) The Matt Ryan to Julio Jones party continued this season. Despite facing the Legion of Boom on their home turf, the duo connected for 139 yards and a TD. They may as well be match up proof. Matty Ice ended the day with 335 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.
2.) Once again, Jimmy Graham led the team in targets, receptions and yards, resulting in 14.9 Chalk pts.
3.) Despite the low yards per carry (3.6), Christine Michael found the end zone twice and scored 23.3 Chalk pts.
Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans
1.) You almost couldn’t go wrong this week with RB. Lamar Miller got in on the fun, posting his biggest game of the season. He racked up a total of 168 yards and 2 TDs. His receiving TD was the most impressive play of the game; he basically had the entire Colts defense between himself and the end zone and still managed to walk in.
2.) It was very surprising to see Will Fuller active for this game. He had been questionable all week and was expected to be ruled out. Despite being active, he was a non-factor. In his absence, all the targets were allocated to DeAndre Hopkins. Although he did not put up big numbers, it was good to see him have a heavy workload.
NY Jets @ Arizona Cardinals
- ) The only thing worth talking about in this game is David Johnson. The Cardinals offense has been a bit lame this year, so something needed to change. They finally decided to lean on their RB, who is the best RB in the league. There is no debate there. Against the Jets defense, which ranked in the top 5 against the run going into the game, Johnson racked up 138 yards, 3 receptions, and 3 TDs. Credit does need to be given to the offensive line because 2 of this TDs he walked in untouched.
