These days there’s so much going on in our lives that I’ve seen people having less and less time to write lengthy pieces, despite wanting to. Sometimes the focus isn’t there, and sometimes there’s not enough energy left to write something longer than a line.

We’d like to invite everyone to join in—writers, readers, and innocent bystanders—to contribute a line that will chain into one cohesive poem. You get the best of both worlds: the minimum effort of a one liner, and a solid piece at the end. *cross fingers*

How to Play:

  1. Read each of the three poems linked below and pick one (or two, or three) that you’d like to contribute a line to.
  2. Leave a response (comment) to the poem posts that contains your one-line contribution. (One line, not one stanza.) Please don’t submit your line as a draft to Chalkboard or as a response to another comment of the post. Our editors will add each line to the body of the poem in the original post, and attribute your contribution.
  3. Your line must be 1–12 words in free verse and should support or strengthen earlier lines or the main theme of the poem. No rhyme is necessary, but you’re welcome to play with any poetic devices you like.
  4. Tamyka Bell, being herself, has thrown a challenge in the mix: for someone to come up with a line that will fit perfectly in all three poems, providing a cross-link between them. Note that this is not compulsory and you can time differently the same line so that we don’t end up with the same poem three times.

I’ll do my best to keep up with the influx of contributed lines so you can follow the master poem as it develops. But I’m often asleep when the rest of the world seems to be writing, and I might not get to new lines fast enough, so remember you can always check the latest comments to see if there are lines yet to be added.

I’ll close this project on the 17th March, tidy up the final poems, and let everyone know what we ended up with!

Now for the good stuff:
