A One-line Poem

Sati

A sacrifice, either chosen or forced

Was it not enough
for her heart to burn
by the loss of her love?

Yet, ignorance ignited
her body —
Burnt alive, she fueled
the pyre for two, not one.

Author’s note:
*History echoes without hesitation, all the mistakes that we’ve made so far. If only, we were wise enough to learn from them!

Thank you, Kathy Jacobs, Harper Thorpe, and the Chalkboard community for the regular poetry prompts.
This week’s prompt, Alive, by
Lee-Anne Hancock, resurrected a lot of thinking about what it means to feel alive.
But, at times, one learns the real value of something, only after losing it. My heart feels that we can appreciate our lives better by acknowledging its cost, both tangible and intangible.

*Sati System — Practice by a widow, to burn herself on the pyre of her deceased husband.
