Skittish hares freeze
still as statuary, then
dismiss me as a low threat
and resume grazing,
while memories of Jesse’s
exuberant barking echo
within my warehouse of
joy and heartache.

Note from author: Jesse Boy was a handsome Kerry Blue who discovered the joy of chasing the abundant and elusive jackrabbits on his evening walks. Luckily, Jesse was process-oriented because he never caught a rabbit — just lots of cactus needles. We’ll miss him forever!
