Salt water rivers,
Bay wide as the sea.
Barnacles on boats,
A good place to be
From.

Swimming with nettles,
Summers so free,
Burns on the skin,
A good place to be
From.

Boats going fast,
Foot in a ski,
Eating crabs at the marina,
A good place to be
From.

Riding bikes in the woods,
Poison ivy so itchy,
Friends too far away,
A good place to be
From.

Small town amusements,
Hang at the Dairy Freeze,
Restless and bored,
A good place to be
From.

Movie house twenty
Miles from me,
Nothing to do,
A good place to be
From.

Racial discord,
Ruined memories,
Prejudice, segregation,
A good place to be
From.

Conservatives everywhere,
Black skin not free,
Memories tainted,
A good place to be
From.

Northern Neck
of Virginia,
Part of
My homeland,
My country,
The USA.

I was always a writer but lived in a bookkeeper’s body before I found Medium and broke free — well, almost. Working to work less and write more.
