A
rose lay
in pieces,
brought down by luck,
giving up its blood to the grey sidewalk

While its frail and shattered beauty lasted
Generally
In our minds
As word
Rose

A
Frail and
Flimsy thought
Shattered martyr
Rests her heart, love forsworn, lust forgotten

Passion ruptured, stolen, thrown in reverse,
rose toned rapture’s
fragrance lost,
pitch black,
now.

But
More than
This flower,
More than a scent,
A rose can be a memory waiting.

A wedding bouquet, crisp yet still intact,
A blossom once
pinned on a
lapel,
dried.

Blood,
tawny
from the sun.
Hips lay, petals
parted. Joined under God’s eye we plant seeds.

Silken paths remembered — something old, lived
anew. Thrown, the
once borrowed
promise
ends.
