years of blue
(a response to “Image Prompt #10”)
i havenʻt returned for years.
the ocean whose warmth we once shared has grown cold, though i try to rub my heart with memories.
they still are there, iʻm sure: the glimmering channels
coursing through towering reefs
the caves we searched
for red, silver, golden treasures
to bring back to sunlit strands
i still have mine —
spears, fins, goggles,
wetsuit, gloves,
the accoutrements of the hunters we once were
thereʻs some photographs
i donʻt look at them anymore
best friends,
smiling, under sunny skies
ready,
to plunge the sparkling turquoise beyond
somewhere,
the trails we followed
separated
i cannot find you beyond the waves
and you surely have not found me
the summer comes
again, she calls
our ocean, somehow, colder
as i cross these familiar sands.
i havenʻt returned
for years.
