What’s Age Got To Do With It?
And Who Doesn’t Love Classic Cars?
Quite frequently, when I go shopping at my favourite grocery store, The Apple Market, I have noticed one or another handsome classic car parked in a short driveway between two of the buildings.
These cars are always shiny and in mint shape. I always wondered to whom they might belong, and who would risk parking such expensive cars in a grocery store parking lot, where they could easily get dinged by some careless driver.
So, anyway, recently I was at the store, and I noticed the vintage red Ford truck in the image above. It was a gray and overcast day and the shiny, bright red vehicle really stood out. So I stopped to take a few photographs, I mean, who wouldn’t?
Once in the store, I was rooting about in one of the produce bins unsuccessfully trying to find a ripe avocado pear. One of their employees, an older gentleman wearing an old style white overall, noticed I was having trouble and came over to help me.
While he was helping me, another customer came by and hailed him. “Hey Ronnie, that’s a beauty Ford truck you have outside!”
I chipped in and said, “That’s your vintage truck parked outside? Wow, what a great vehicle!”
Pleased, Ronnie turned to us, wreathed in smiles. “You bet”, he told us gleefully. “And that’s just one of my cars. I have five others, and one of them I race.”
So now the mystery of who owned those vintage cars I keep seeing there was solved.
Ronnie then told me that he has been into cars since he was a teenager, but now he’s going on 87 and just THINKS he’s a teenager.
He’s in his 80’s, owns a garage full of gorgeous vintage cars, races one of them, AND has a part time job at a grocery store.
That’s impressive, folks.
Rock on, Ronnie Calder!
Authors note: I haven’t yet been able to get a photo of Ronnie, but when I do, I will add it to this piece.
Here we are a month after I wrote this and STILL I have not managed to catch Ronnie to get a decent photo. I did however, find a link to a short video of him and his dragster.
Nov 11, 2020. FINALLY!!! On his Facebook!
