Veteran’s Day is once again upon us, yet despite an abundance of world turbulence, most Americans are unaware of the frightening shortage of military personnel we are experiencing.

How serious is this problem? Very, unless you consider failure to meet recruiting goals by all branches except the Marines and the still fledgling Space Force of little importance. The Army has a shortage of 10,000 recruits, the Navy almost 8,000, and the Air Force is also short 10,000. Don’t think they haven’t tried. There are huge signup bonuses, and the age limit to join has been upped to 42 by some branches. Forty two? Can that really be correct? It most certainly can be. How many 42-year-old men and women do you know who can keep up with 18-year-olds? Allowances for neck tattoos, past drug, and assorted criminal convictions have been made, still, the shortages remain.

There are numerous reasons for this troubling trend. The inability to recruit in person during the pandemic has been cited as a major obstacle with ongoing ramifications. Low unemployment is another obvious issue. Discouragement from family is yet another. Young Americans coming from homes in which not one…
