Quarantine has forced us all to become technologists. Remote working, Zoom calls, collaborating on google docs, e-signatures, the list goes on and on. For some, these tools were gimmicks not vital resources for your business, but now, companies of all sizes appreciate what technology has done for businesses all over the world.

I’m sure we all have more than enough examples of friends and family members who are completely tech-illiterate. Those who yearn for the days of yore, full of rotary phones, paper checks, handwritten letters, and face-to-face meetings. Believe me, we know them all too well. Just this week I taught my dad how to make a GIF. A feat so daunting he poured himself a glass of whiskey to toast to his mastery of technology. We get it. We’re not technologists, and we’re not here to ridicule people who don’t like tech.

Let’s start with something small. A simple change to an everyday activity, that will help you save time and reduce frustrations. It’s not the sexiest topic in the world, but learning how to use this tool could simplify so many aspects of your life. We’re talking about banking, specifically, Open Banking.

The goal of Open Banking is to give everyday users like you and me more control over our money and simplify all things banking. Through Open Banking, you can give third parties access to your financial information. Why would I want to do that? Third parties can offer budgeting tools, tracking tools, savings plans, or investment strategies all aimed at making financial management easier.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the intent behind Open Banking, let’s make it tangible. The rest of this post is a step-by-step guide for how to set up Open Banking for Bank of Ireland customers. Unfortunately, each bank has a different process for “turning on” Open Banking. If you don’t bank with BOI, tell us which bank you use and we will try and make a how-to-post for you.

Bank of Ireland Keycode App

When setting up the BOI Keycode app you need to verify your account through your existing BOI 365 account. This means that you will be going back and forth between your 365 account, and the Keycode App onboarding flow. We have found that the easiest way to do this is to have the BOI Keycode App open on your phone and your BOI 365 account open on your computer. If you prefer to keep everything on your phone and want toggle back and forth between the BOI Keycode App and your BOI 365 app that’s fine as well.

Below is the step-by-step process for downloading and installing the BOI Keycode App for open banking.

Step 1: Download the BOI keycode app on your phone.

Step 2: Login to your 365 account on your computer. Click “Manage Account”, and then click “Manage Keycode App”.

Step 3: Click “Register” and verify your phone number by clicking “continue”.

(Computer)

Step 4: A text message from BOI with a security code will be sent to your phone after you click “continue” in step 3. Enter that security code into the prompt displayed on your BOI 365 account on your computer, and hit “continue”.

(Computer)

Step 5: Open the BOI keycode app on your phone. It should display a serial number. Enter that serial number into the prompt displayed on your BOI 365 account on your computer, and hit “continue”.

Step 6: Hit next on the keycode app on your cell phone. Your BOI 365 account (computer screen) will display a password. Enter this password on your BOI Keycode App (phone), and hit next.

Step 7: Your BOI keycode app (phone) will now display a registration code. Enter this registration code into the prompt displayed on your BOI 365 account (computer), and hit continue on your computer.

Step 8: Hit “next” on your BOI Keycode app (phone) and then hit “yes” to confirm that you have entered the code into your computer.

Step 9: Create your own PIN number. This is a 4 digit pin that is not related to any other number that you have with BOI. This is not your ATM pin, this is not the last 4 digits of your cell. This is an entirely new pin. (it can be the same as your ATM pin if you would like). Once you have set your pin hit “OK” on your BOI Keycode app (phone).

Step 10: Check the two tick boxes on your BOI 365 account prompt and click “complete registration”.

(Computer)

You did it!

I know this isn’t as fun as beating a level in CandyCrush or as entertaining as browsing through Tiktok or Instagram, but now you have a new tool that can help you simplify your life. Hopefully, this was helpful to you, and you now feel more comfortable with the concept of Open Banking. It is still a very new concept (rolled out in September 2019). People tend to fear the new, and we understand that this will take time. Open Banking is an incredibly powerful tool and has the potential to revolutionize the way we bank and the way we think about our finances.
