We are excited to announce our newest seed investment in askRobin, an Estonian fintech with a mission is to bring the best financial services at the lowest cost for under-banked customers in Mexico and Latin America.
askRobin is a financial services marketplace where all gainfully employed middle-class customers can compare rates between all available lenders. Unique risk-based segmentation and pricing of applicants allows lending partners to better adjust their risk, offering more competitive pricing. In two years askRobin has grown to a platform of 5 million users and almost 100 lenders, issuing over €26 million in credit.
The team is led by CEO Rain Sepp, an inspiring serial entrepreneur with the experience of taking a fintech startup from founding to IPO on AIM (Credit24). He is joined by Viktor Mahhov who has deep finance and media expertise serving in executive roles at Ekspress Grupp AS (NASDAQ: EEG1T) and public energy company Estonian Energy. Gabriela Perez with a decade of sales to banks and retailers in Mexico and Karl Kaju with his proven SEO and customer funnel management expertise are heading the customer development and marketing teams.
I already knew Rain and we had briefly talked about askRobin before, but for the first time I really got to see the working passion and ability of this team up close and personal while mentoring at Ragnar Sass’s Salto Camp in Tbilisi, Georgia Nov 5–8 2019. The askRobin team pulled all-nighters, released product, and got great results in increased sales in 72 hours — it was great to see them in action. They went on to win the “most VC investable” title against some tough world-class competition, so I got to present a bottle of campaign to Rain on behalf of the mentors and investors. We went on to talk and Change Ventures to lead this seed round.
We could not have done it without a great group of top angel investors and founders like Ragnar Sass (Founder & CEO Salto Network, Co-founder Pipedrive CRM) and Taavi Tamkivi (founder/CEO Salv) who believed enough in the deal to transfer the money to the company before the paperwork was completed.
I also want to especially thank Anu Oks from Estonian Business Angels Network (EstBAN). Anu helped us set up an EstBAN syndicate of 11 angels including Tsutomu Komori (Bene Asia Capital), Timothy Heath (Vereeni Investments) and Alvar Lumberg (TransferWise). The speed and simplicity of using an Estban syndicate for gathering a group of angels was amazing — in one week we were able to get a syndicate formed, documents signed and deal executed.
Thank you everyone, including our lawyer Greete-Kristiine Kuru at Cobalt, that made it possible to put together and execute this transaction all remotely in these difficult times with such speed and agility!
