This July full moon has many different names across the world. It’s called the Buck Moon, Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, Mead Moon and Ripe Corn Moon. For 2024 this second Capricorn full moon of July is also an astrological Blue Moon.

July’s full Buck Moon swings back around for a powerful second spin in Capricorn — the same zodiac sign as June’s Full Moon. We currently calculate time with a 12 month solar year, rather than a 13 month lunar year. Every few years, the lunar cycle is disrupted to fit that extra Moon in.

Instead of a cycle of New Moon then Full Moon on a sign and its complement (Cancer/Capricorn), we get a cycle of Full Moon then New Moon in the next sign. (Capricorn, Leo). That’s where we’ve been these past few years.

With this second Full Moon in Capricorn, we’re reverting to the original cycle — a Blue Moon. Not to be confused with a calendar Blue Moon — where there are five Full Moons in a season, occurring next month of August. The astrological Blue Moon is the important one to track.

Our nature is meant to be wild and free. We are called to be alive in the mystery of this wilderness. We are called to come back to ourselves — our true, original being. We need to harness this nature of ours right now — amidst the chaos and confusion we choose life and love.

The first full moon after the summer solstice in the month of Ashadha (July-August) is also known as Guru Purnima. Buddhists, Hindus and Jains traditionally celebrate Guru Purnima as a day of grace and new possibilities dedicated to all spiritual and teaching guides.

Guru Purnima is a favorite festival celebration that pays homage to the full brilliance of a summer moon. The symbol of the fullness of a disciple’s gratitude for their true teacher. As vast as the tides contained within the ocean — so too is the depth of gratitude for the awakened state of being this blessing brings.

This day is dedicated to our gurus and true teachers — we offer prayers in thanks and gratitude for the knowledge and lessons provided.
