Out-of-control thinking will frustrate your beginning efforts at meditation.

But trying to control your thoughts will also cause frustration and disappointment in your meditation and daily life. It’s best to find a middle way.

Try getting playful with your thoughts and working with them instead of resisting them.

Don’t take your thoughts so seriously.

Here are three easy ways to work with distracting thoughts in meditation.

#1 — Return To Your Breath

No one begins as the blissed-out meditator in a perfect lotus posture.

I’m a 78-year-old meditator and don’t get anywhere near the lotus posture. And even though I’ve been practicing Zen for 25 years and meditating daily for more than two years, I can’t stop my thoughts. But when I get quiet enough, thoughts stop on their own.
