I am always looking to be a better student and a better teacher. With this goal in mind, I have been researching platforms like Coursera Udemy, and Teachable to gather ideas.

Lawrence Kurniawan, an Operations Coordinator at Uber wrote a nice piece on Quora.com on what is the most effective way to learn.

He said there is an excellent and free online course on this topic at Coursera, “Learning How to Learn”. I took his ideas and merged them with others I came across. This is what I gathered.

The Fundamentals

There are two modes of thinking: Focused and Diffuse
1. Focused mode happens when you engage a problem intently. An example might be taking a test or concentrating on memorizing something. You use most of your working memory for this type of thinking.

2. Diffuse mode is thinking behind the scenes. Example: Imagine that you encounter a difficult math problem. You solve it, no matter how you try. Now you take a break. While you are taking this break, your brain doesn’t stop trying to solve the problem — it will keep on working, without you even
