Crisis happens to everyone.

Learning to handle our crisis situations well is a key to managing our lives well.

Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher, said: “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”

Emotional resilience

Problems do not disappear. Waiting for a problem to go away only prolongs the crisis. We must face our crisis head-on.

Research shows that those who deal with minor stresses can manage major crises with greater ease. So, resilience is a plus.

I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.
-Chuck Swindoll-

Deciding to face our crisis head-on provides a sense of control and does not allow crisis situations to cripple us.

Dump the excuses

The result is blame-shifting. Psychologist call this; “displacing blame.”

Blaming others is never a formula for success. Blame shifting will never take us higher or improve our lives.

99% of failure comes from people who have the habit of making excuses

— Abraham Lincoln

Excuses steal our vision, rob our purpose, and fuel hopelessness.

Re-frame the challenge

Thomas Edison re-framed the following story; According to a 1961 Reader’s Digest article by Edison’s son Charles, Edison walked over to him as he watched the fire destroy his dad’s work. In a childlike voice, Edison told his 24-year-old son, “Go get your mother and all her friends. They’ll never see a fire like this again.” When Charles objected, Edison said, “It’s all right. We’ve just got rid of a lot of rubbish.”

A boy says his mother has ruined his life by taking away his smartphone privileges because they caught him texting while driving. A therapist talks about the dangers of texting while driving and the reasons his parents may want to teach him not to do that. Eventually, he can see that his mother’s actions weren’t meant to ruin his life, but we’re meant to save his life.

Notice how re-framing a crisis will position us for greater resilience.

Can you re-frame a situation in your life today? It may help you get over a situation from your past.

Get past your past

We must deal with our past or our past will deal with us.

“We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.”

-Rick Warren-
