I believe we all have a spiritual side. I believe we’re born with an innate ability to connect with our intuition and recognize this amazing life force that inhabits each and every one of us.
Unfortunately, the world we live in doesn’t always support this aspect of our life. In fact, it makes us believe the material realm is all that matters and, as a consequence, we spend years living as disconnected as possible.
If we’re lucky enough, there comes a time when we can no longer pretend everything’s fine. We need to know more, to be more, to live more.
We need to rediscover that part of our being that is deeply connected to the Universe and knows how to guide us and how to make us feel whole. We need to awaken.
From my experience, there can be more than one spiritual awakening during our lifetime. Each awakening teaches us the lessons we need at that moment in time — the Universe gives us exactly what we need to grow and evolve, and the more we evolve, the more there is to discover.
These are some of the signs you’re experiencing a spiritual awakening.
1. You feel a need to read, learn new things and understand the world
Maybe you’ve always been an intellectually curious person, but now your curiosity has reached a whole new level. You have an infinite list of books to buy, authors to learn from and metaphysical questions to dive into.
Psychology, art, religion, physics, self-help, neuroscience , whatever it is — you want to learn it all.
You’re probably getting more and more attracted towards Eastern religions and mindfulness practices, as they help you feel grounded and find inner peace no matter how turbulent your life is at the moment.
This need to understand yourself and the world better will add a sense of richness and abundance to your life — it’s as though you’re a new born baby seeing the world for the first time, amazed at how magical the Universe is and how grateful you are for your life.
2. You’re becoming aware of your ego
This was one of the first transformational signs I’ve noticed in my life. It all started when I began reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle — if you haven’t read it yet, please do yourself a favor and buy it right now!
Becoming aware of your ego can have a deep impact on your life because it helps you realize you haven’t been the captain of your ship — meaning, you haven’t been the creator of your life. Your ego has.
Your ego has programmed you to be afraid, stay in your comfort zone and do whatever it takes to be accepted by family, friends and society in general.
It will never give you the push you need to follow your dreams because that’s not its job — its job is to make sure you’re safe. But safety won’t lead you anywhere. There will always be risks you have to take in order to live the life you want to live.
However, once you’re aware of your ego, you’re able to identify its voice and choose to listen to your inner wisdom instead.
3. You can clearly see how conditioned you are
A spiritual journey involves recognizing how conditioned you have become. It puts you face to face with your deepest wounds, doubts, beliefs and fears, so that you can let them go and finally step into your power.
Your ego loves your conditioning because the more conditioned you are, the safer you are — from the ego’s point of view.
Your conditioning makes you behave in line with what’s expected of you. It prevents you from healing your wounds because it’s too attached to them, and it limits your potential because it doesn’t want you to grow. It wants you to stay the same regardless of how miserable you feel.
Awareness of your conditioning is an incredible sign of transformation.
4. You’re rediscovering your authentic self
As you let your limiting beliefs go, you get closer to your authentic self. You learn to listen to your intuition and act upon what’s true for you.
In a previous article, I wrote:
“Your true self doesn’t care about what others have to say. It doesn’t care if your goals and dreams will please your family, or if your friends will approve your new plans. It just wants you to be happy.
When you finally realize how much you’ve been neglecting yourself and prioritizing others, your people-pleasing tendencies slowly disappear and instead make space for self-love. Suddenly, earning more or securing a better-sounding title is not so appealing anymore.”
5. You feel a pull towards nature and stillness
Awakening involves opening up your eyes to the beauty of the Universe. The clouds, the trees, the stars and the animals — it’s all there, waiting to be witnessed.
Many of us are addicted to the chaos of our mundane lives. We’re used to being busy, living on autopilot, running from one place to another.
As we grow spiritually and emotionally, we learn to appreciate the silence. We feel a need to be still, to quiet our minds and connect with our bodies. We want to reflect on our path and find the answers we crave — which can only be achieved by going within.
The world outside can sometimes feel confusing and disordered, and Mother Nature is always ready to welcome us.
I’ve been going through my spiritual journey for a few years now.
As a child and teenager, I was highly connected to this side of my personality, as most of us are. I loved talking to animals, walking in nature and reading about the planets. I saw this abundant life all around me and it felt like pure magic to me.
But at some point in my life, I silenced my spirituality. I absorbed the message that I was weird and I should just grow up, focus on my studies and ignore the non-material world.
I’m incredibly grateful for having rediscovered my path and that’s why I believe it’s so important to talk about this topic. There will always be something missing in our lives if we don’t give ourselves the space to be who we are without judgment.
We’re spiritual beings even when we silence our spirituality — we just need to reconnect with it.
