We’re always chasing excitement — the mirage of the future shimmering in the distance.

Driving in the hot desert sun, you see shimmering water far down the road. But you drive and drive, and you never reach the oasis.

We chase the best meals, vacations, lovers, cars, exciting friends, best jobs, and splendid vacations. But they never pay off with lasting happiness.

Happiness is not constant euphoria. Laughing your ass off at the last call, drunk and dangerous with your bar friends, is not true happiness. But it’s exciting.

I used to do a bit of this, but not anymore. I’m older and wiser.

You can find true happiness by changing the way you see the world. Not by chasing experiences to mask the suffering you feel.

Boring people have learned it’s more satisfying to meditate or spend time alone to see the way things are.
