As someone who has watched over 1000+ van life videos on YouTube, I have learned a lot about the simple yet effective way that people live on the road.

I find peace by watching van life videos. These videos show me the daily activities and lifestyles of people living in vans. These videos are a source of inspiration for me.

I have been inspired by the van life movement’s embrace of minimalism and the focus on experiences over possessions. Their ability to find peace of mind and contentment with only the essentials has been particularly striking to me.

Here are 7 lessons that I have learned from watching van life videos.

1. Simplicity is key

Van lifers understand that living with less can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. They focus on the essentials and get rid of anything that doesn’t serve a purpose. This helps them to declutter their space and their minds, which can be especially important when living in a small space like a van.

By understanding that only a few small things are necessary for a happy life, I am able to avoid the temptation to accumulate or purchase numerous items online that may end up going unused and taking up space.

Instead, I take the time to carefully consider whether I will actually need or use an item after the initial two weeks of excitement have passed, whether there are alternative options available, and whether I am being influenced to make the purchase by others.

2. The importance of community

Many van lifers have found a strong sense of community on the road. They meet fellow travelers, exchange stories and advice, and often end up forming close bonds. This sense of community can provide a strong support system and a sense of belonging, which can be especially valuable when living a nomadic lifestyle.

Maintaining good relationships with those around us is crucial for our overall well-being and happiness. This includes people from all walks of life, regardless of their cultural background, thought processes, or daily habits.

While it may not always be easy to connect with those who have different lifestyles, it is important to remember that we all want to be happy and support each other to the best of our ability.

3. The value of flexibility

Van life requires a certain level of flexibility and adaptability. Things don’t always go as planned, and van lifers have to be able to roll with the punches. This flexibility has taught them to go with the flow and embrace unexpected changes, which can be a valuable skill in any situation.

In the past, I was someone who preferred to stick to a strict schedule and do things with advanced planning. I disliked last-minute changes.

However, I have learned that while planning is important, flexibility is also key. Life is unpredictable, and we must be prepared to adapt to changes as they come.

The person with the most flexibility has the best chance of achieving the outcome he or she desires — Tony Jeary

For example, while I may want to work all day, if there are other family matters that require my attention, it is important for me to be flexible enough to prioritize those as well. This does not mean ignoring my work completely but rather finding ways to rearrange my schedule and make time for both.

In short, it is important to find a balance between planning and flexibility in order to navigate the unpredictable nature of life.

4. The beauty of nature

Van lifers are often drawn to the beauty of the outdoors, and they spend a lot of time exploring and enjoying nature. Watching van life videos has taught me the importance of getting out into the natural world and appreciating its beauty. Whether it’s hiking through a national park or simply sitting by a river and soaking up the scenery, immersing ourselves in nature can be incredibly nourishing for the mind, body, and soul.

I have learned that nature can provide a sense of peace and solitude that is hard to find in our busy, modern lives. It has reminded me to take a step back and appreciate the world around me, and do my part in protecting and preserving the natural beauty that surrounds us.

The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness― John Muir

The van life community serves as a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and the positive impact it can have on our overall well-being.

5. The joy of experiences over possessions

Van lifers often prioritize experiences over possessions. They are willing to sacrifice material possessions in order to have new and exciting experiences. This has taught me that it’s important to focus on creating meaningful experiences rather than accumulating more stuff. Whether it’s trying a new activity or travelling to a new place, experiences can bring us joy and fulfilment in a way that material possessions often can’t.

Through experience, I have come to understand that accumulating more possessions does not necessarily bring happiness. Instead, I find joy in learning about new cultures, meeting people with diverse backgrounds, and trying new things such as developing new habits and tasting delicious foods.

The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been, and the memories we’ve made along the way

These experiences enrich my life and bring me happiness in a way that material possessions cannot.

6. The power of self-sufficiency

Many van lifers have learned to be self-sufficient on the road. They have to rely on themselves to fix problems, find food and shelter and navigate unfamiliar territory. This self-sufficiency has given them a sense of independence and empowerment, and it’s something that we can all strive for in our own lives.

In the past, it was often difficult to find resources and guidance on how to learn new skills. However, the internet has made it much easier to access information and find resources on almost any topic. While the internet may not be able to teach us everything, it can certainly point us in the right direction and provide us with a starting point.

For it is in your power to retire into yourself whenever you choose. ― Marcus Aurelius

It is important to be self-sufficient and take ownership of our own learning and development, as other people may not always be available to assist us. By taking advantage of the vast resources available online and making an effort to learn as much as possible, we can become more independent and self-sufficient.

7. The value of a positive attitude.

Van lifers often face challenges on the road, but they tend to approach these challenges with a positive attitude. They have learned to find the silver lining in tough situations and to focus on the good things in life. This positive attitude has helped them to stay happy and motivated, even in difficult circumstances. It’s a valuable lesson for all of us, as a positive attitude can help us to overcome challenges and find joy in life.

I have learned that having a positive attitude can greatly impact both my own life and the lives of those around me. A positive attitude allows me to approach challenges with a sense of optimism and resilience, and it helps me to see the good in any situation.

“A positive attitude may not solve all our problems but that is the only option we have if we want to get out of problems — Subodh Gupta

Additionally, a positive attitude is contagious and can have a ripple effect, influencing those around me to also adopt a more positive outlook. Overall, I have learned that a positive attitude is a valuable asset and can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life.

Conclusion

Overall, van life has taught me that living simply, connecting with others, and embracing new experiences can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life. These are lessons that we can all apply to our own lives, no matter where we are or what we’re doing.
