Humans are social creatures. By nature, we strive to connect with others. The relationships we forge with people around us are the driving force of our happiness. The quality of our relationships helps us to make our lives more meaningful.

One good example of how our social nature comes into play is when we’re in love with someone — think for a second about the first time when you fell in love with someone special? How did that feel? I bet you would describe the moment as one of the happiest moments in your life.

You felt happy for a good reason — being loved is one of the fundamental needs of human beings, which explains why we feel depressed when we are unloved and isolated.

And it comes as no surprise that when we encounter negative people in our lives, our mood deteriorates. We can start feeling anxious and depressed. The feelings negative people project onto us are reflected in our state of mind.
